Saturday, September 8th - Glendale, AZ

Last fall, the boys cross country team finished a few places out of last in their debut of the 2011 season. This year, the Deer Valley boys Cross Country team showed a year of work is paying off by finishing in 13th place, nearly 100 points less than last year, and an average of 1:00 faster per varsity runner.

The Skyhawks were led this year by junior harrier Dustin Ratcliff in a 82 second PR time of 18:39 and 49th place. He was followed next by freshman Eli Cox, who finished 75th with a 19:08, almost good enough for fastest time a year ago. Senior Jesus Saldana ran a big PR of just over a minute to sneak in at 19:16 in 80th. Freshman Ben Orrahood (89th - 19:36) and Grant Gibson (108 - 20:20) finished out the scoring for the Skyhawks. Luke Vogt and freshman Zack Strong displaced other runners, crossing the line in 21:09 and 21:15 respectively.

The girls, the toughest athletes at Deer Valley ran well despite being shorthanded. Freshman Amber Zehner served notice that she's a force - leading the racers through the first 400 meters on her way to a 38th place finish in 22:39. That time was just 30 seconds off last year's top runner, Erin Kloberdanz's debut time. She was followed by senior Krystal Bell, competing in her first distance race of any type (well sans one 3200 last track season). She was 71st place in a time of 25:13. Wrapping up the girls participation was Rebekah Mann who showed resolve, passing more than 20 girls on her way to a 73rd place finish in 25:38.
